Deciding on a tube, bottle or jar for your skin care product?
There’s another option that has become popular - one-time use, disposable pads.
Once thought of only for teenage acne treatment products, more beauty brands have been using pads lately for anti-aging products – and dressing them up, in upscale packaging.
Brands are taking advantage of the pad's convenience and effectiveness, and pairing the round discs with jars that look and feel luxe.
Other brands have been using pads in unique shapes to fit better on specific areas of the face, such as around the eyes, to target wrinkles.
Arbonne's 'Genius' Pads
Arbonne's Intelligence Genius Pads require users to pour the solution into the jar before first use.
Arbonne launched its new “Intelligence Genius” Nightly Resurfacing Pads, but its companion product – a Resurfacing Solution - comes in a bottle.
The pads are packaged in a plastic jar. Users are instructed to pour the solution over the pads when they first open the jar, and then use all 60 pads within 3 months to ensure freshness. The product retails for $95.
Key ingredients are a proprietary Phytonol complex that combines alfalfa extract and chicory extract, which work synergistically to help fight visible signs of aging, including tone, smoothness and lines. The solution also contains Bakuchiol, a plant retinoid.
Arbonne Intelligence Genius claims to improve skin suppleness, firmness, and elasticity. In the brand’s clinical study, 100% of the 50 testers saw an improvement in fine lines and wrinkles after 8 weeks of regular use; while moisture, firmness and elasticity improved after 2 weeks.
Why did the brand choose to pair its solution with a pad?

The pad absorbs just the right amount of product, and delivers the correct amount during application, while also providing gentle exfoliation at the same time,” explains Dr. Peter Matravers, Arbonne’s Chief Scientific Officer. He continues, “The pads buff the skin, which further enhances the efficacy of the active ingredient. They’re easy to use, but above all, they deliver results you can see and feel.”
But all pads are not created equal. “We researched and tried out many types of pads. Some either absorbed too much, drenching the skin, or they were too dry. Our pad choice optimized the product’s delivery system,” Matravers says.
Pads with Collagen-Boosting Power
When a pad is meant to remain on the skin for any period of time, a curved, contour shape can be useful.
Wilma Schumann European Skin Care sells “Collagen Booster Pads,” which retail for $18 for 5 applications. The gel pads are curved half-moon shapes, to fit perfectly around the contours of the eye area.
The pads are hydrating, and contain 100% pure collagen, according to the brand, to visibly improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and puffiness. They also contain rosa canina fruit oil and hyaluronic acid – and claim to deliver a “mini face lift” effect after wearing for 15 minutes.
Arcona's Solution Pads
Skin care brand Arcona also uses pads, for its product called “The Solution Pads.” The packaging looks minimalist and upscale – a frosted white jar, with a matte silver cap. It sells for $42 for 45 pads, and the suggested use is 2 to 4 times per week.
The textured pads are made from woven cotton, which are pre-soaked in a 4% concentration of glycolic acid, which is combined with a glucosamine, grape seed extract, and phenyl butyl nitrone molecules, among other ingredients.
The product claims to exfoliate, while delivering antioxidants to the skin to target free radicals. Refined pores and smoother skin are other benefits. Plus, amino sugars and glycoproteins are included to help reverse photo-aging and smooth fine lines.
What did Arcona like about pads?
It’s a very convenient way to apply the product, the brand says, and a pad helps to ensure an even application.
