Radiant Orchid has been named the Pantone Color of the Year for 2014 – so what are beauty brands doing with the pretty hue?
It’s already being spotted everywhere – from nail polish to lipstick and eye shadow, in colors ranging from the pinkish-purple to lilac and deep purple.
"Radiant Orchid enlivens the skin, making all who wear it feel more healthy and energetic,” says Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute.

Eiseman continues, “This multifaceted hue is seductive when combined with red, and pairs well with its sister shades of lavender, purple and pink, which provides an assortment of lipstick and blush options. Radiant Orchid’s exuberance also acts as a brilliant finishing touch to nails.”
Nails in ‘Radiance’
Dermelect Cosmeceuticals is launching “ME” Anti-Aging Nail Lacquer Treatment in a shade calledRadiance in March, 2014.
“We were actually planning to introduce an orchid color before knowing it was going to be ‘color of the year,’” says Amos Lavian, founder, Dermelect. “We were thrilled when we saw Pantone’s forecast,” he adds.
Lavian says that metals will be trending for 2014. “We combined our orchid color with a metal texture – calling itRadiance – so it will definitely be a must-have for the new year,” he predicts.
Purples For Eyes and Lips
Other brands already have products being sold in Radiant Orchid – or versions of it.
Gl? minerals has a lip gloss in Lilac Luster, and Palladio Beauty sells a Lip Stain in Orchid.
Some brands are showcasing the color in eye shadow palettes, housed in compacts with clear lids. Gl? minerals Eye Shadow comes in a pretty lilac hue.

Palladio Beauty has several different orchid shades for eyes, including its Baked Eyeshadow Trio in Lovely Lilac;Beauty Silk FX in Femme Fatale; and an Eye Liner Pencil in Lavender.
Will Consumers Go for It?
Trendy or not, makeup has to be flattering. But Eiseman says Radiant Orchid is a modern, and surprisingly versatile shade. “Blending both cool and warm undertones, purple is an appealing hue for distinctive combinations and flattering to many hair, eye and skin tones,” she says.
Lavian agrees - and says the shade is very flattering on all skin tones. “It will be perfect for spring, and will look fresh as a daytime pastel, or can also work for night,” he adds.
If you're into considering the deeper meaning of a color's 'vibration,' Radiant Orchid is said to evoke feelings ofconfidence, joy, love and health – so consumers might just be drawn to wearing makeup in these shades.
“It encourages expanded creativity and originality,” says Eiseman. She continues to explain that the color “inspires confidence and emanates great joy, love and health. It is a captivating purple, one that draws you in with its beguiling charm.”
No matter what feelings the color is meant to evoke, it can't hurt that the hue looks so pretty – and will no doubt draw some attention in the makeup aisle. It's very wearable, which seems to be a change from Pantone's pick last year - edgy Emerald.
Brands may also want to show off the shade in clear packaging.
“Consumers like to see the exact color they’re getting, through a clear package or bottle, like our nail polish,” says Lavian. “Plus, Radiant Orchid looks so pretty that it should be shown off,” he adds.
